July 18, 2013 -- Johns Hopkins Hospital regained its top spot on this year?s U.S. News & World Report list of best U.S. hospitals. The Baltimore hospital had held the top spot for 21 years until 2012, when Massachusetts General earned the title.
The rankings are based on several factors:
- Patient survival looked at the hospital's success at keeping patients alive.
- Reputation considered the opinions of 200 doctors in each specialty who were randomly selected and asked to list the hospitals they thought were best in their specialty for complex or difficult cases.
- Patient safety score rated hospitals on how well they work to prevent the worst kinds of harmful mistakes.
- Other factors looked at care-related aspects such as nurse staffing, technology, and other things linked to quality care.
This year, 18 hospitals earned a place on the Honor Roll, meaning they ranked very high in at least six specialties. They are:
- Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
- Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
- Cleveland Clinic
- UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
- Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago
- (tie) New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, N.Y.
- UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
- Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston
- UPMC-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
- Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
- Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.
- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
- NYU Langone Medical Center, New York City
- Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, St. Louis
- IU Health Academic Health Center, Indianapolis
- Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia
- University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland
