U.S. News & World Report Ranks Best Hospitals - WebMD

July 18, 2013 -- Johns Hopkins Hospital regained its top spot on this year?s U.S. News & World Report list of best U.S. hospitals. The Baltimore hospital had held the top spot for 21 years until 2012, when Massachusetts General earned the title.

The rankings are based on several factors:

  • Patient survival looked at the hospital's success at keeping patients alive.
  • Reputation considered the opinions of 200 doctors in each specialty who were randomly selected and asked to list the hospitals they thought were best in their specialty for complex or difficult cases.
  • Patient safety score rated hospitals on how well they work to prevent the worst kinds of harmful mistakes.
