Want to Buy a Pool Table? Find Out the Important Factors | What is ...

Pool tables are a wonderful addition to any home. It is fun to have a billiards at home and it is a great way to bring family together and entertain friends.

A billiard table can add a great design to your home. You can find out many choices of pool tables when it comes to the materials.

200565851-001

Different types of pool table materials

Pool tables need a level playing surface. And slate is used to make that surface. The surface of the pool table is available both in original slates and synthetic slates. The original slates are used for high-quality pool tables while synthetic slates are used to make inexpensive versions of pool tables. If you want to own a pool table with synthetic slate, you can find out three different types out there on the market.

Slatron:

Slatron also referred to as Permaslate is a plastic layer placed atop of the pool table board. This surface level is considered one of the most durable slates compared to other forms of synthetic slate.

Well, it does not mean that it is susceptible to damage. Any surface spills can cause it to wear out. Therefore, you should maintain it on a regular basis.

Honeycomb:

You may get it by its name. The pool table surface is just like a plastic honey-bee like surface which is prepared using the layers of hard plastic. The surface remains intact for long years.

MDF:

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. This pool table surface is prepared by squeezing small chips of wood together. This type of playing surface use to be light weighted. While playing on this board, you should not lean over the rail of the table as it can tip over.

Though pool tables with synthetic playing surfaces are not like high quality pool tables, they make a great entertaining addition to your home.

Apart from knowing the different types of slate playing surfaces, it is time to know other materials that are needed to construct a pool table.

Cloth:

The playing surface is covered with felt cloth which is often green in color. 80 percent wool and 20 percent nylon are used to manufacture this felt cloth. This blend is durable and long-lasting and makes the perfect pool-playing field. It is not easy to identify visually if the blend is made of wool and nylon. It is a better idea to talk to a sales person for exact cloth details. Check carefully the securing method of the cloth. The cloth may be stapled, glued or screwed into the pool table.

Construction of the pool table leg

All the weight of the pool table is borne by the pool table legs. It is better to opt for wooden legs, not ?legs made of particle boards. Always go for either two pedestal legs or four corner legs. Several billiard ?tables come in two legs that become unsteady over time. Check out how the legs have been attached to the pools to decide if the legs can bear all the weight of the table. Keep in mind that traditional? nuts and bolts do not offer a better attachment option since they loosen faster over time while a quad anchor gusset system offers more stable attachments.

Cushions and rails

If you want a standard and quality table, opt for K66 cushions. High-quality Grade A rubber makes a good cushion and allows for efficient play. Whereas rails are concerned, opt for rails made of solid wood. This is because it allows for easy replacement of the cushions when needed. Make sure the wood rails are made of solid hardwood such as oak, poplar and maple. Never opt or wood rails made of softer woods like pine. This is because the billiard balls create a lot of vibrations and denting that softer wood cannot withstand but hardwood can.

While buying a billiard table for your home, you must check out these factors. Then only you can have the best pool table.

Owning a pool table does not mean you can make the most of your investment until you place it properly in your home. A proper placement of the table gets your home a lavish look and allows you to enjoy it to the fullest.

Exterior space, the lobby of a lodge, a dining space, the space next to your bar counter can turn into a perfect game room for you. Utilize any of these spaces and see how it becomes a great entertaining space for your family, friends and guests.

Trade union threatens to shut Scotland's only oil refinery over staff suspension

Custom byline text:?

EXCLUSIVE By Paul Hutcheon

Stephen Deans was suspended at the Ineos facility at Grangemouth amid claims he was involved in a bid to manipulate the contest to select a Westminster candidate in the town.

However, the company reversed its decision after Unite promised to "shut your factory down" by launching a strike.

Labour has been dogged for months by the row over Unite's alleged activities in the battle to select a party candidate for the Falkirk seat.

Unite, Labour's biggest donor, recruited around 100 new members to the party in an attempt to help its favoured candidate, Karie Murphy, get the nomination.

A Labour investigation prompted leader Ed Miliband to criticise Unite and resulted in Murphy and Deans being suspended by the party.

Deans was both the chairman of the Falkirk West constituency party and chairman of Unite in Scotland during the controversy. His day job is at Ineos where, according to an internal Unite document, many of the new recruits were signed up.

"Last, but very much not least, is the exemplary Falkirk ... Using similar methods to Garston and Paisley, but at a much more intense level, led by the potential candidate, and very much supported by the local activist base, especially at Ineos we have recruited well over 100 Unite members to the party in a constituency with less than 200 members."

At the union's executive committee meeting last week, Unite's convener at the Ineos plant, Mark Lyon, said Deans had also been suspended by the company.

On a webcast on the union's website, he hit out at the "lies" told in the media about the Falkirk fiasco, adding: "Stevie had been suspended from work. It was an opportunistic attack, to try and attack him.

"Every action that Stevie Deans and every other member of our branch has taken has been within rule, within company procedures. It's been in all respects legal ...

"The General Secretary has been involved in discussions and we're dead grateful for that. Pat Rafferty [Unite's Scottish secretary] has been involved in discussions with the company as well."

Lyon claimed that the employer reinstated Deans following a meeting of hundreds of workers last week: "The message was clear: you can either reinstate Stevie, and let's get back to some sort of sanity and normal business, or we'll shut your factory down and there will be strike action taken."

He added: "Stevie started back at work this morning."

Lyon was sitting next to Unite general secretary Len McCluskey when he made the speech.

The Grangemouth facility is of major industrial importance. A strike in 2008 over pensions led to panic buying of petrol across the country.

The industrial action also resulted in BP closing the Forties pipeline system, which is responsible for delivering almost a third of Britain's North Sea oil production.

Two Unite sources confirmed Deans worked for Ineos.

A union insider said Ineos had been unhappy at the company's name being mentioned in connection with the Falkirk debacle.

Lyon's remarks were followed by a speech by McCluskey, who said: "I want to express my support for Stevie Deans and Karie Murphy. Our union will stand by them."

He described Labour's report into Falkirk as a "shoddy farce" and a "disgrace".

Police Scotland last week confirmed its officers would not be investigating the Falkirk debacle.

However, the Information Commissioner is believed to be looking into aspects of the row.

Scottish Conservative MSP Alex Johnstone said: "It just shows that no matter how damaging this has been for the Labour party, neither they nor Unite seem able to bring this matter to a reasonable conclusion.

"In the 1970s this country was brought to its knees by exactly this kind of petty squabbling, and I can't believe lessons from the past have just not been learned."

An SNP spokesperson said: "This shows how completely out of control the Labour Party situation in Falkirk is. We have been calling on Johann Lamont for weeks now to get a grip ? but Scottish Labour say London is in charge.

"This row should have been sorted ages ago ? without resorting to wasting police time ? but the person who is supposed to be in charge of the Labour Party in Scotland appears completely helpless."

A Unite spokeswoman declined to comment.

Neither Deans nor an Ineos spokesman returned the Sunday Herald's call.

The Mobile Code of Conduct - Direct Marketing News

As the federal government makes overtures toward regulating what marketers can and cannot do with consumers' digital data, trade organizations have responded by initiating their own policies for self-regulation. The maturation of the mobile computing environment has complicated this picture, which is why today the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) codified principles for data collection measures and notifications on mobile devices.

Most of the DAA's principles were ported over from guidelines it had previously published, focusing on the collection of data in a desktop computing environment. However, smartphones and tablets offer some unique data sets, which prompted the DAA to extend its regulatory oversight. These include data related to information that pinpoints a device's physical location and data from consumers' personal directories?defined by the DAA as calendars, address books, phone or text logs, and photo or video data created and/or accessed on a mobile device. In addition, the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI), one of the seven trade organizations that comprise the DAA and whose members are ad networks and ad exchanges, released a Mobile Application Code designed to complement the DAA's self-regulatory program.

Lou Mastria, managing director at the DAA, calls these guidelines ?the largest choice tool that's ever been available either online or in the mobile environment. It educates consumers on what's going on with data, gives them a sense of how data is powering their experience, how it's being used, and whether it's being used responsibly.?

The new mobile-focused guidelines state that companies must ?give clear, meaningful, and prominent notice? when transferring so-called ?Precise Location Data? to a third party (such as a marketing affiliate or services provider). Companies also need to provide a clear means for consumers to withdraw their consent that allows this transfer.

Additionally, the DAA regulations forbid companies from intentionally accessing a mobile device without permission and retrieving or using any Personal Directory Data.

These stipulations reflect the crux of the DAA's data regulations across all digital environments: namely, when data is collected across different applications over a period of time?whether in a mobile or desktop environment?consumers must have ?clear, meaningful, and prominent notice? that this is happening and be provided with a simple mechanism to opt out.

However, the best practices that define ?clear, meaningful, and prominent notice? aren't always clear, especially in a mobile environment where screen sizes are smaller. Stu Ingis, general counsel of the DAA, points to the Advertising Option Icon, which the organization introduced in 2010, as a method for giving notice (users click on the triangular icon that appears next to an ad and receive relevant information about why they're being marketed to). Mastria points out that the icon is served at a rate of one trillion times per month.

The release and enforcement of these new regulations will occur in stages. The first stage, beginning today, is informative and notifies companies that they must take action to be in compliance. After a period of time?Mastria was reluctant to commit to a specific time frame, though he estimated roughly 12 months?the DAA will put out additional guidance and enforcement will begin via organizations like the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

?One of the hallmarks of the DAA program is it's ecosystem wide,? Mastria says. ?It doesn't just apply to DAA participants. It applies to everybody who's collecting? cross-app data.?

Non-complying businesses will be investigated by the organizations tasked with enforcement. ?Your company could wind up in a press release and there's bad press,? Mastria says. ?There's also the possibility if you don't come into compliance, we'll refer you to the FTC.? The FTC's suggested guidelines around data governance typically serve as the groundwork for the regulations established by marketing trade organizations.

Mastria points to a less punitive reason why businesses want to comply with the DAA's guidelines: ?Consumers want to do business with reputable companies,? he says. ?More than you would think, companies call up and want to be compliant with the DAA principles because their partners want them to do it."

Plea deal offered to Cleveland kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro, TV station reports

A plea deal has been offered to the man accused of kidnapping three Cleveland women and raping them repeatedly while he held them in captivity at his home during the past decade, according to a Cleveland TV station.

If Ariel Castro, 53, of Cleveland accepts the deal, he would avoid the death penalty, according to a report by WKYC-TV in Cleveland. The deal, however, has not been finalized. The station reports a hearing, during which Castro would accept the offer, was to be held on Friday.

Maria Russo, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty?s spokeswoman, said she could not confirm if a formal deal had been offered to Castro.

Phone calls to Castro?s defense attorneys were not immediately returned. A spokeswoman for Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Russo said a hearing had not yet been scheduled for Friday.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys met in Russo?s courtroom on Wednesday and said they were working toward a plea deal.

A trial for Castro is scheduled for Aug. 5. He has pleaded not guilty to 977 charges, including murder, rape and kidnapping. According to the indictments, he is accused of beating and starving one of the women to force her to miscarry ? a charge that could lead to the death penalty.

The women ? Gina DeJesus, 23, Michelle Knight, 32, and Amanda Berry, 27 ? were freed from Castro?s home on the west side of Cleveland on May 6, along with Berry?s 6-year-old daughter, who was fathered by Castro during her captivity.

Edward Snowden still stuck in airport. Would life in Russia be better?

Edward Snowden is expected to get papers Thursday to let him leave the Moscow airport. He might consider staying in Russia. That didn't work out so well for Soviet-era American defectors.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / July 24, 2013

After initial reports Wednesday that Mr. Snowden had received Russian government documents allowing him to leave Moscow?s airport ? where he has been holed up for the past month ? came the news that unexplained bureaucratic entanglements would keep the US citizen in the airport?s transit zone for at least another day.

The former spy agency contractor ? wanted by the US for violating the Espionage Act by divulging the details of secret telephone and e-mail surveillance programs ? is seeking temporary asylum status in Russia. Russian lawyers aiding Snowden had expected the government to issue Wednesday papers allowing Snowden to establish residence in Moscow while Russian authorities consider his asylum request. Officials say the asylum decision could take up to three months.

But whether at the airport or in Moscow, Snowden will remain an irritant in US-Russia relations ? even though he seems unlikely to make public any more of the US government secrets he is thought to be carrying with him. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month set a cessation of Snowden?s leaking activities as a condition for him remaining in Russia.

If Snowden?s stay in Moscow stretches into the fall, he would be in the Russian capital at the same time President Obama is scheduled to visit Moscow for a meeting with Mr. Putin. Mr. Obama is set to attend a G20 summit in St. Petersburg Sept. 5-6, and had accepted the Russian leader?s invitation to add Moscow to his itinerary for a bilateral meeting.

But with Russia harboring Snowden, furious members of Congress are calling on Obama to demand a venue change for the G20 summit, to snub Putin?s invitation to a bilateral summit meeting ? and even to keep the US out of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Water on Mars? Ancient Red Planet had humongous ocean, say scientists.

Water on Mars: Images from NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter suggests that billions of years ago, as much as a third of the Red Planet's surface could have been covered with liquid water.?

Scientists have spotted more evidence that an enormous ocean on Mars covered much of the planet's surface billions of years ago.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The latest clues were found in photos from NASA's powerful Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the planet. The images show what appears to be an ancient river delta, which may have emptied into a?vast Martian ocean?that inundated up to one-third of the Red Planet long ago, a new study reports.

"Scientists have long hypothesized that the northern lowlands of Mars are a dried-up ocean bottom, but no?one yet has found?the smoking gun," study co-author Mike Lamb, an assistant professor of geology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, said in a statement. [Photos: The Search for Water on Mars]

The new study does not provide the long-sought smoking gun, researchers stressed, but it further bolsters the hypothesis.

The team studied high-resolution images of a slice of the northern lowlands snapped by the HiRise camera aboard NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which can distinguish features as small as?10 inches?(25 centimeters)?on the Red Planet's surface.

Specifically, the scientists looked at a 39-square-mile?(100 square kilometers)?area that's part of a larger region called Aeolis Dorsa, which lies about?620 miles?[? greatest diameter of the dwarf planet, Ceres]?(1,000 km)?from Gale Crater. (NASA's?Curiosity rover?touched down inside Gale Crater last August, kicking off a planned two-year surface mission to assess Mars' past and present potential to host microbial life.)

The small section of Aeolis Dorsa features many ridges called inverted channels, which form in river bottoms over time when coarse material, such as gravel, is deposited by flowing water. Inverted channels can linger long after the rivers that created them have evaporated, helping researchers trace the past activity of liquid?water on Mars.

HiRise images allowed the study team to do just that in the section of Aeolis Dorsa they examined. They found that the inverted channels spread out markedly and slope steeply downward near their end, just as streams here on Earth do when they approach and empty into the sea.

Sony PlayStation 4 waltzes past the FCC

Sony PlayStation 4 waltzes past the FCC

Sony's PS4 dev kit passed by the FCC roughly a week ago, and now its consumer-oriented counterpart has passed through Uncle Sam's offices. Not only do the federal documents show the consoles' polished exterior, but they once again note a "max clock frequency" of 2.75GHz, teasing just what kind of horsepower sits inside the black parallelogram. Though there isn't much more to note in the agency's files, a duo of system labels marked with "Made in China" and "Made in Japan" hint that Hirai and Co. will be manufacturing the hardware in both those territories. Mark Cerny's wunderconsole won't be hitting store shelves until later this year, but it already has the appropriate paperwork to make the trip stateside.

President Obama whimpers about being black

By James Kirk Wall, Saturday at 5:42 pm

Obama
The United States is a horrible racist country. The only reason a black man was elected President is because everyone forgot that he was black. And then in the next election they forgot again. Hard to believe? That?s because it isn't true. America today has greater equality for women and minorities than at any other time in history.

But black ?leaders? want to hide all that from the black youth. They don?t want to talk about all the social progress and the people who made it happen. They want to remove any talk of progress because of a court ruling in some town in Florida. President Obama doesn't want to talk about how he became President, he wants to talk about how he was followed in a department store 35 years ago.

To all the young black people out there, your elders are doing you wrong. They want you indoctrinated into being a victim. They want you to have a grand excuse for every failure you have in life. They may mean well, but they?re screwing you over big time.

We live in a modern world of global competition. With all other things being equal, when someone who has an excuse to fail competes with someone who doesn't, they will lose. You have no excuses. Your elders want you to believe it?s the 1800s. It?s not the 1800s anymore. They want you to believe it?s the 1950s. It?s not the 1950s any more. It?s time to stop with the BS excuses and distractions and get to the real issues of the black community and all communities.

I used to know everything there was to know about raising a child.? Then I became a mom.

On July 7th, 2010, my daughter Isla was born. ?I was as prepared as anyone in the history of the world.? My vast experience in child rearing (babysitting, friends with kids, and countless observations conducted on checkout lines at Stop and Shop) helped me to create a plan.? Our days would be methodical, organized, and Zen.? I was going to be a cross between June Cleaver and Gandhi.

That was the plan.? Now I know I might as well have spent my time planning the weather.

My five step plan stressed positivity, sleep, and health.

Step 1: Isla's nursery is her retreat.? This will introduce independence and she will spend her nights in there.? We will all be well rested to start our days bright, early, and fresh.

The result?? She sleeps in "Daddy's bed" as she calls it, although it is equally my bed.? "Equally" meaning I get the left quarter, he gets the right quarter, and she takes the remaining half.? This allows her to fit perpendicularly between us.? I spend most nights with her right foot implanted in my left cheek.? Her father is learning to sleep through the beatings.? It's? a slow adjustment, but it seems to be allowing us both a solid 3 hours of sleep per night.

Step 2: Be back at pre-baby weight in 6 months.? I will attend yoga, pilates, and kickboxing at the gym. ?Isla will enjoy the daycare they provide.

The result?? She's three, and I am currently wearing maternity pants from her pregnancy.? As for my trips to the gym, I could usually complete a solid 5 to 8 minutes per class. At that point, I would be summoned by one of the daycare workers because a tiny tyrant stole a toy she was playing with, that we also have at our house (but that she doesn't care about when we are home.)

Step 3: Respect other families' peace in public

The result?? Today's trip to Whole Foods took place during what should have been naptime.? By the time we got to the earth friendly cleaning products, her freak-out could be heard in the bulk grains aisle.? A twenty minute conversation with the man behind us at the register ended with her telling him "Wow, you must have a lot of babies in your belly."

Step 4: Our home will be our respite.? A place for everything, and everything in its place.? All of our friends and family are encouraged to pop in with no notice so they can marvel at my ability to keep a home.

The result?? We haven't seen the living room floor in 8 months but we are confident it still exists.? When someone knocks on the door, we hide in the kitchen.

Step 5: Gourmet meals will be prepared nightly by me.? This will most likely require an apron as I will be in a cute outfit for when my husband gets home from work.

The result?? You'll have to excuse me.? I just spilled juice on my yoga pants and the pizza will be here any minute.

So, as you can see my plan was solid, but the execution may need a little work. ?I like to call it a plan in progress. We are happy, though, and I wouldn't plan it any other way.

San Diego Chargers' Manti Te'o Has the Top-Selling Jersey Among NFL Rookies

San Diego Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te?o has the top-selling jersey among all rookies based on sales from April 1 through June 30, according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.?

The second-round pick out of Notre Dame (No. 38 overall) has become one of the most polarizing figures in sports over the last year, thanks in large part to his elaborate girlfriend hoax, which played out on the national stage and went beyond the realm of sports.?

Are you going to buy a Manti Te'o jersey?

Are you going to buy a Manti Te'o jersey?

  • Yes

  • No

While Te?o locked up the top spot in jersey sales for rookies, Tavon?Austin, EJ Manuel, Cordarrelle Patterson and Eddie Lacy all found themselves in the top five.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin?Kaepernick?had the top-selling jersey, followed by Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III, Adrian Peterson and Peyton Manning.?

The Chargers are hoping the addition of the former Notre Dame defensive captain will do more than just bring in jersey sales. His draft status was all over the map following his off-field problems and his inability to make much of an impact against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS National Championship Game.?

The Irish lost in a blowout, 42-14.

Defensive coordinator John Pagano?will be looking to put together the best unit possible, and if Te'o steps up in training camp, he could very well start in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.?

Thousands march to back ousted Egypt president

By AYA BATRAWY and TONY G. GABRIEL

CAIRO (AP) ? Thousands of protesters calling for the return to power of Egypt?s ousted Islamist president demonstrated in Cairo on Friday as the military warned it would crack down on any violence, underlining the point with a show of force by fighter jets flying over the capital.

Youth activists who launched the mass protests that led to Mohammed Morsi?s toppling by the military gathered in Cairo?s Tahrir Square and outside two presidential palaces to celebrate their gains, raising fears of new clashes.

The Interior Minister in charge of police, Mohammed Ibrahim, issued a statement on the ministry?s Facebook page cautioning the ousted president?s supporters against going to Tahrir Square and warning both sides against committing acts of violence.

The rival gatherings came just days after a new interim Cabinet was sworn-in that includes women, Christians and members of a liberal coalition opposed to Morsi, but no Islamists. The ousted president?s Muslim Brotherhood party has refused to take part in talks with the interim leadership. The country has been deeply polarized over the July 3 military coup that was supported by millions who accused Egypt?s first democratically elected leader of abusing his power and giving too much influence to his Brotherhood group.

On Friday, pro-Morsi protesters waving Egyptian flags and pictures of the ousted leader chanted slogans against army chief Gen. Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi. ?El-Sissi is a traitor!? the crowds shouted. ?Morsi is our president!?

?The problems of the first years could have been solved by dialogue, but the opposition always refused,? said 28-year-old Osama Youssef, who traveled to Cairo from the eastern province of Sharqiya to show his support for Morsi. ?The opposition didn?t succeed in getting power through constitutional measures, so it chose to take power by staging a military coup.?

Mainly Islamist supporters of Morsi have been holding a sit-in in front of a mosque in eastern Cairo since the former leader?s ouster and the numbers swelled Friday as his backers answered a Brotherhood call to join the rallies, dubbed, ?Breaking the Coup.?

The Brotherhood organized marches across Cairo as thousands of people defied the sweltering heat to take to the streets in support of Morsi in other cities, including Alexandria and several Nile Delta provinces.

?People are united in their call for the return of President Mohammed Morsi, the elected, legitimate president,? said Ayman Wahid, who joined a march in Cairo. He said he represents ?real Egyptians? who want Morsi back.

Yasser Meshren, who came to Cairo from the southern province of Bani Suweif, accused the military of tricking the people by overseeing the elections only to then remove Morsi, disband the country?s interim parliament and suspend the constitution, which was approved in a referendum.

?You stole my mother and my sister?s voice,? Meshren said of the armed forces.

Police and military troops and armored vehicles were deployed heavily in Cairo around security and military installations, court houses, and the capital?s entrances.

Minor incidents of violence broke out in Cairo, according to security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren?t authorized to give information to the media. Pro-Morsi supporters and opponents shouted at one another after Friday prayers in the main Al-Azhar Mosque and police detained six Islamist protesters for throwing rocks. Separately, a man was stabbed and hospitalized when a crowd of the deposed president?s supporters questioned his identity and found out he was a policeman in civilian clothing.

Fears of greater violence were high after 51 Islamist protesters were killed last week when the military opened fire on demonstrators outside the Republic Guard forces club. The Brotherhood has accused the troops of gunning down the protesters, while the military said it was provoked by armed Morsi supporters who were trying to storm the military building.

In response to the recent violence, Britain announced it was revoking five export licenses for equipment destined for Egypt?s military and police.

On Friday, fighter jets flew over the protesters and military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali issued a stern warning on Facebook, telling civilians not to pose as military personnel or approach military installations or troops, saying anyone doing so risked death.

The military also dropped flyers warning against violence as a crowd of at least 400 pro-Morsi protesters marched through northern Sinai?s main city of el-Arish. The flyers urged people to protect their land and the Sinai Peninsula from ?terrorists? and provided two numbers for people to call to report suspicious behavior.

The area has been the most lawless corner of the country since autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising in 2011, and the number of attacks by militants against Egyptian security forces has risen since Morsi?s overthrow. To combat the wave, Egypt has beefed up its forces there with the agreement of neighboring Israel, which is also concerned about the growing strength of religious extremists in the area.

Friday?s rallies coincided with the 10th day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which Egyptians celebrate as the day their armed forces crossed the Suez Canal in the 1973 war with Israel. The surprise assault led to the return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt, which had been occupied by Israel.

Fighter jets flew overhead in an air show throughout the city to commemorate the day.

Meanwhile, the Brotherhood party said seven leaders of its parent group, including the former speaker of the parliament and an ultraconservative Salafi preacher, were transported to a heavily guarded prison, a move the group said was illegal because the men have not yet been charged. They have been accused, among other things, of inciting violence.

The ousted president, who has been replaced by interim leader Adly Mansour, has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed military facility since his ouster. He has not been charged with any crimes.

The Brotherhood?s TV channel has been taken off the air along with other Islamic channels seen as sympathetic to the group. Al-Jazeera?s Egypt affiliate was raided by security forces, and on Friday, the channel?s signal, along with its flagship English and Arabic news channels, were intermittently interrupted. The reasons for the disruptions were not clear.

Pro-Morsi protester Mostafa Fathi, a 33-year-old accountant participating in a march along one of Cairo?s main roads, said he viewed Morsi?s ouster and the closure of the TV channels as signs the country was targeting Islamists, as it did during Mubarak?s near three-decade-long rule.

?We were on the right path. We had several elections. We were building democratic state institutions,? he said. ?We don?t want to go back to a police state or a state of injustice.?

NFL training camps opening for business

FILE - In this Sept. 5, 2012, file photo, Commissioner Roger Goodell gestures to fans before an NFL football game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys in East Rutherford, N.J. The NFL and referees' union reached a tentative agreement on Wednesday, Sept. 26, to end a three-month lockout that triggered a wave of frustration and anger over replacement officials and threatened to disrupt the rest of the season. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun, File)

The Buccaneers are getting things under way in Tampa and the Saints open their training camp on Thursday in Mentairie, La.

Over the next eight days, the NFL?s remaining 30 teams will open their camps at various sites.

?

Four story lines for the 2014 season

Happiest man in the NFL

That would be commissioner Roger Goodell, who now can talk about his league?s on-the-field exploits, rather than what?s going on off it. The statistics are frightening. Since the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl, 31 NFL players have been arrested. Goodell promised to clean the league up when he took over, but the offseason arrest rate is up 75 percent since 2003. The case of Aaron Hernandez is the most troubling. One of the best tight ends in the league, Hernandez was recently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Now, with training camp commencing, fans can focus on the NFL season, and not the latest NFL player to make a court docket.

Ex-Utes find new homes

Quarterback Alex Smith was traded from San Francisco to Kansas City and will be paid $8.5 million to lead the Chiefs this season ? with the possibility of a longer contract in the future. Cornerback Sean Smith will join him in K.C., leaving Miami to sign an $18 million deal. And defensive end/linebacker Paul Kruger cashed in big after a breakout 2012 season in Baltimore, signing with the Cleveland Browns for $40 million. All three former Utes are expected to be cornerstones for their teams.

Best new NFL rivalry

The Seattle Seahawks have one of the best defenses in the league and an offense that could prove dynamic if Percy Harvin proves healthy. The San Francisco 49ers simply may be the most talented team in the league. Both are Super Bowl contenders. Both reside in the same division. Best of all, to say they don?t like each other is putting it kindly. Mix it all together and the potential is there for three classic matchups ? two in the regular season and possibly one in the playoffs. Don?t be shocked if one of these two teams wins it all.

Second-year quarterbacks

Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson proved to be the best trio of rookie quarterbacks since the vaunted class of 1983 ? which featured Dan Marino, John Elway and Ken O?Brien. All have the chance to win big. At least one ? Wilson ? has the chance to win a Super Bowl and Griffin III isn?t far behind. Charting their progress will be one of the major storylines of the season. It will be interesting to see if one of them can vault himself into Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers territory as well.

?

Local NFL rookies

Drafted players:

Star Lotulelei ? Carolina Panthers, defensive tackle, Utah

Should start right away. Already being touted as one of the better run stoppers in the league.

Ziggy Ansah ? Detroit Lions, defensive end, BYU

Will have every chance to make an instant impact on one of the better defensive lines in the NFL.

Will Davis ? Miami Dolphins, cornerback, Utah State

Is he the replacement for Sean Smith jumping ship to Kansas City?

Joe Kruger ? Philadelphia Eagles, defensive end, Utah

Has the size and the pass-rushing ability to make an impact. But can Paul?s little brother stay healthy? And can he be consistent?

Brad Sorensen ? San Diego Chargers, quarterback, Southern Utah

Will compete for a backup job behind Philip Rivers. Count on him making the roster with his excellent size and strong arm.

Kerwynn Williams ? Indianapolis Colts, running back, Utah State

Has a ton of potential as a kick returner. Reminds many of former Aggies star Kevin Robinson.

The summer is nearing an end and dawn is breaking for fans of the most popular sport in the nation. Once camps begin in earnest, things will move quickly. The annual Hall of Fame game ? this year pitting the Dallas Cowboys against the Miami Dolphins ? is less than three weeks away ? signaling the start of the preseason. And finally, the regular season begins in the first week of September.

In these next eight weeks, there is much to talk about and even more to analyze. The questions are big. Are the depleted New England Patriots finished? Can Robert Griffin III rebound from a nasty knee injury that wrecked the Washington Redskins? playoff hopes? Can the Baltimore Ravens successfully defend their Super Bowl title after decimating their roster? Can the San Francisco 49ers take the final step toward a championship?

"Excitement?s in the air. Our team got bigger and there?s more of us and these guys got really good," Niners coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters last month. "We?re ready to get started and we?re ready to take the first step."

When last seen, the NFL was coming off one of the most exciting postseasons in recent memory.

There was Ray Lewis and the Ravens making a triumphant run to a championship. There was Colin Kaepernick coming off the bench for the Niners and turning himself into a star. There was Peyton Manning leading the Denver Broncos to the edge of glory, only to give a game away to Baltimore in heartbreaking fashion.

And there were the locals making names for themselves: Bobby Wagner going from Utah State to the Seattle Seahawks and becoming one of the better middle linebackers in the league in his rookie season; Paul Kruger and Sean Smith finally capitalizing on their vast potential, turning in career years and carrying the Utah flag to free agent riches.

"I wanted to come to a team that was excited about me," Kruger said in his introductory Cleveland news conference. "I feel strongly about being a part of something and I feel I can help this team become better."

So how will it all spill into the upcoming season? The year should yield more exciting and competitive football. The beauty of the NFL ? as opposed to baseball and the NBA ? lies in the competitive balance. In most seasons, a true upstart emerges and becomes one of the best teams in the league. Last season, it was the Seahawks, who combined a great defense and the emergence of Russell Wilson to make the playoffs and register a win over the Redskins.

story continues below

Who will make a name for themselves this season? We will all soon find out.

Zach Johnson handles the brown links of Muirfield

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) ? A blue sky and a gentle breeze usually means ripe scoring conditions at the British Open. Just not on the brown links of Muirfield.

Zach Johnson handled it better than anyone Thursday. Helped along by a 45-foot eagle putt and only one bogey despite trouble lurking around every pot bunker, Johnson had a 5-under 66 for a one-shot lead, the first time he's been atop the leaderboard at any major since he rallied to win the Masters six years ago.

Tiger Woods more than survived the late end of the draw, after the sun had thoroughly baked out the crispy greens and allowed only eight of the 20 rounds under par. He knocked one putt clear off the green, but 10 one-putts ? most of them for pars ? carried him to a 69, a good start in his bid to end his five-year drought in the majors.

"The golf course progressively got more dried out and more difficult as we played," Woods said. "And I'm very pleased to shoot anything even par or better."

And for all the talk about Muirfield's men-only membership, at least the club doesn't discriminate against age.

Mark O'Meara, the 56-year-old who won his claret jug in 1998 at Royal Birkdale, shot a 67 and nearly tied Johnson for the lead until his 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th took a hard spin out of the cup. Another former champion, 54-year-old Tom Lehman, opened with a 68.

It was an eclectic group who broke par, from major champions to players making their British Open debut. What they all had in common was finding a way to get through a firm, fast and frightening test at Muirfield that figures to get even harder if the Royal & Ancient doesn't put some water on the links course.

Phil Mickelson opened with a 69 and felt like he got off easy by playing in the morning. Mickelson was concerned about some hole locations being too close to the edge of slopes, and he pleaded with the R&A to let go of its ego and "just set the course up the way the best players can win."

Some of the best did just fine.

"Anytime you shoot under par in an Open ? or a major, for that matter ? you have to be putting at least somewhat decent," Johnson said. "And I putted great. I made some nice birdie putts and obviously that one for eagle. But I struck some really nice, solid par putts. That's what you've got to do to stay in it."

Rafael Cabrera-Bello of Spain joined O'Meara at 67, while the group at 68 included Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker, who each have contended on Sunday over the last two years in the Open. Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, who lost in a playoff at the Masters in April, and 19-year-old Jordan Spieth were in the group at 69.

It was a beautiful day along the Firth of Forth. And it was hard work.

No one felt safe until the ball stopped bouncing along the crusty fairways, and no one was sure when that would happen.

"I haven't seen anything like this," said Snedeker, who tied the 36-hole Open record a year ago at Lytham. "I've played in, I think, five Opens. This is completely new to me ? foreign to see a 2-iron going 300 yards. You have got to be wary of how you're shaping your golf ball, and what shot selections you're using on the greens."

O'Meara thought he hit a reasonable bunker shot on the 15th until it kept rolling ? and rolling ? off the green and into another bunker.

"They get so glassy and crispy around the holes," Graeme McDowell, who played with Woods, said after a 75. "You literally can see 300 footprints around the hole from all the players and caddies that have been out there today. They just get really shiny, and really glassy. I couldn't single out a pin that I thought was unfair. But if you got on the wrong side of them, they could make you look very, very silly."

Yes, there was plenty of that.

Rory McIlroy never looked comfortable, and it caught up with him. After missing left of the 12th green, he chipped it up the slope and watched it roll back down to his feet. His next chip was long and he wound up with double bogey. On the 15th hole, his putt to the back pin rolled well past the hole and into a bunker for another double bogey. A bogey-bogey finish gave him a 79, his highest score at the Open since that 80 in the vicious wind of St. Andrews in 2010.

At least he had some company.

Luke Donald, another former No. 1 player in the world, had a double bogey and a triple bogey two holes apart on the back nine. He shot 80. Nick Faldo celebrated his 56th birthday with a return to the links where he won two of his three claret jugs. He shot a 79, but still enjoyed the nerves and the emotions of seeing the gallery lining both sides of the fairway in his first Open in three years.

Lloyd Saltman got the 142nd Open off to a dubious start when it took him three tee shots to get his ball in play. He made a quadruple-bogey eight. Some eight hours later, Woods hooked his opening tee shot so far left, and into grass so deep, that he took a penalty shot for an unplayable lie. Woods hit into a bunker, but blasted out to 4 feet to escape with bogey. He made four birdies in his round, including a 25-foot bender behind the 13th hole. But it was the clutch putting that kept him going.

Dustin Johnson played the three par 5s in 4-under, yet what made him smile was a par. From left of the par-3 seventh green, he chipped between two bunkers and watched the ball ride the rounded face of one, roll precariously near the top of another and settled 4 feet away.

"That," he said, "was sweet."

Mickelson, coming off a win at the Scottish Open on a links-styled course at Castle Stuart, rolled in three big putts early in his round and kept it together with great lag putts for par when he ran into what he called "technical difficulties."

He rallied with a pair of late birdies, only for his last attempt from 15 feet above the hole on the 18th to slide some 6 feet by for a three-putt bogey. Even so, Lefty was pleased to be done as the greens turned brown.

"I got very lucky to play early today because as the day wore on and we got to the back nine, about a third of every green started to die and become brown," he said. "And the pins were very edgy, on the slopes. The guys that played early had a huge, huge break. Because even without any wind, it's beyond difficult."

It was tough all day.

Ninety-eight players in the 156-man field had at least a double bogey on their scorecards. Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover might have summed it up best when he took to Twitter after opening with an 80.

"Muirfield 1, Me 0."
