Cancer Supplement Focuses on Breast Cancer Care | ONS Connect

The Amer?i?can Can?cer Soci?ety has pub?lished a?sup?ple?ment to Can?cer that out?lines an inno?v?a?tive new model of breast can?cer reha?bil?i?ta?tion, addresses the numer?ous phys?i?cal issues faced by women with breast can?cer, and offers hope for an improved qual?ity of life for all women with breast can?cer through reha?bil?i?ta?tion and?exercise.

The model has been devel?oped over the past year by a?panel of inter?na?tion?ally known experts in the field, includ?ing ONS mem?bers Ann Berger, PhD, RN, AOCNS?, FAAN, and Deb?o?rah Mayer, RN, PhD, AOCN?, FAAN, with the sup?port of the Amer?i?can Can?cer Soci?ety and input from national health?care pro?fes?sional orga?ni?za?tions and advo?cacy?groups.

An excerpt from the lead paper by Stout et al. in this spe?cial sup?ple?ment states, ?The cur?rent med?ical model of care for breast can?cer is focused on dis?ease treat?ment fol?lowed by ongo?ing sur?veil?lance for local or regional recur?rence. This approach lacks atten?tion to the impact of treat?ment on patients? phys?i?cal and func?tional well-??being. Breast can?cer treat?ment can lead to phys?i?cal impair?ments and func?tional lim?i?ta?tions, includ?ing pain, fatigue, upper extrem?ity dys?func?tion, lym?phedema, weak?ness, joint arthral?gia, neu?ropa?thy, weight gain, car?dio?vas?cu?lar effects, and osteo?poro?sis. A?grow?ing evi?dence base of sci?en?tific lit?er?a?ture sup?ports prospec?tive sur?veil?lance, for early inter?ven?tion and exer?cise to pre?vent or mit?i?gate many of these?concerns.?

The sup?ple?ment fea?tures 16 arti?cles that aim to increase the num?ber of women who receive reha?bil?i?ta?tion and exer?cise to max?i?mize qual?ity of life for the one in eight women who will be diag?nosed with breast can?cer in their life?time. The sup?ple?ment appears with the April 15, 2012, print issue of Can?cer.
