For example, it is impossible to take a single photon and make a number of photons that are in the exact same quantum state. This may seem minor, but it's not. If perfect copying was possible, it would, among other things, be possible to send signals faster than the speed of light. This is forbidden by Einstein's theory of relativity.

For years, scientists have been experimenting with the idea of approximate quantum copying. A recent paper published in Physical Review Letters (PRL), by Sadegh Raeisi, Dr. Wolfgang Tittel and Dr. Christoph Simon of the Institute for Quantum Information Science at the University of Calgary takes another step in that research.

They showed that it is possible to perfectly recover the original from the imperfect quantum copies. They also proposed a way that his could be done in practice.

"Copying classical information is very important in our daily lives," says paper co-author Simon. "Think of the prevalence of photocopiers, faxes, scanners. It was quite surprising for physicists when they realized that the same thing is not possible for quantum systems, at least not perfectly. It is then important to study what exactly is possible and what isn't."

The research can be used in a variety of ways. First, it shows clearly that quantum information is preserved when copied. Even though the copies may be imperfect, the original quantum state can be recovered. In practical terms, it might lead to a precision measurement technique based on quantum physics for samples that have very low contrast, such as living cells.

The Institute for Quantum Information Science is a multidisciplinary group of researchers from the areas of computer science, mathematics and physics.

"At the fundamental level our world is governed not by classical physics, but by quantum physics," says Simon. "We are trying to understand the consequences of that for fundamental concepts such as information and trying to use this understanding to develop new kinds of quantum technology."

John Legend Wants To Be The 'Best You Ever Had'

G.O.O.D. Music crooner makes a promise in sexy new video for 'Tonight.'

Admit it, you weren't entirely comfortable with John Legend name-calling and hair-tugging on Kanye West's searing "Blame Game." And we get it: The Springfield native's catalog is the work of a perfect gentleman, not an Ohio player. With his latest, "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)," Legend is ready to make up — all night.

Last month, MTV News strutted onto the Los Angeles set of the "Tonight" video, where Legend opened up about what propels the song. The tune appears on the April 10 soundtrack for "Think Like a Man," a big-screen adaptation of comedian Steve Harvey's runaway best-seller, dating-advice book. (No word yet on whether it will also find a spot on Legend's forthcoming full-length, Love in the Future, tentatively due this summer.)

"The whole idea of the song is seduction and swagger and confidence," the G.O.O.D. Music singer/songwriter explained. "We just wanted to put together a video that portrayed that vibe."

Tapping Ludacris to spit another saucy 16 — "Throw you on the grill/ That's 'cause seven days a week, you're my five-course meal" — Legend doesn't so much sing the hook as ooze it. "Baby, Tonight you need that / Tonight, believe that /Tonight, I'll be the best you ever had," he promises.

"The energy of the song is like, kind of quiet confidence," Legend said. "It's kind of what my personality is like anyway and ... this song is kind of exuding that confidence where you're like, 'I do what I gotta do. I don't like to talk about it a lot but I'mma talk about it today,' he added with a naughty grin.

The clip opens with Legend sitting alone on a bed, shirtless and sporting grey slacks and his signature stubble. Before long, he's joined by a lingerie-clad lady-friend. And although scenes from "Think Like a Man" flash on one bedroom wall, the amorous pair seem more concerned with the action offscreen.

"I don't wanna brag, but once we get in there, I'm gon' be the best thing you ever had," Luda told us on set, sampling the chorus. "That's what basically my whole verse is; the whole song, everything John Legend and myself are talking about to all these beautiful women out here."

Legend, who recently became engaged to longtime girlfriend and Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen, turns up the temperature in a way we haven't quite seen from him yet. But it's a welcome departure. Believe that.

Hugh Hefner's son pleads in domestic violence case

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Hugh Hefner's 21-year-old son has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from an incident with his girlfriend at their Pasadena home.

Assistant Pasadena City Prosecutor Chris Blankenhorn tells City News Service that Marston Hefner pleaded no contest Tuesday to corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant.

Marston Hefner was arrested last month after police were called to the apartment he shared with 20-year-old Claire Sinclair, the 2011 Playmate of the Year. Sinclair had minor injuries and sought a restraining order against the younger Hefner the next day.

Blankenhorn says Marston Hefner is expected to undergo a year of domestic violence counseling. He also is ordered to stay away from Sinclair for three years.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Helped by Hollywood, President Barack Obama's campaign is releasing a 17-minute documentary that portrays the president as a resolute figure who confronted a massive economic downturn and the aftermath of the nation's war on terrorism with determination and a series of tough decisions.

The documentary, commissioned by the Obama campaign, provides a window into how his team is trying to sell the president's re-election bid: As a man of principle who faced daunting challenges from the moment he won election but persevered to rescue the U.S. auto industry, begin rebuilding the economy, pass health care reform and authorize the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

"As president, the tough decisions that he would make would not only determine the course of the nation, but they would reveal the character of the man," says actor Tom Hanks, the film's narrator.

Obama's campaign released "The Road We've Traveled" on Thursday at 300 screenings across the nation. The documentary was directed by Davis Guggenheim, whose credits include the Academy Award-winning, "An Inconvenient Truth," about Al Gore's global-warming campaign.

Republicans have dismissed the film, which cost at least $345,000 to make, as nothing more than a slick piece of propaganda that fails to take full stock of Obama's presidency. Critics will likely note that the documentary doesn't emphasize a jobless rate of more than 8 percent during most of Obama's presidency, mounting debt or spiking gas prices.

"The American people don't need a Hollywood movie to know what the president accomplished over the past three years," said Kirsten Kukowski, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman. "Unfortunately Americans feel Obama's accomplishments each and every day after President Obama led our country to higher unemployment, record debt, and higher gas prices."

In the week since Obama's campaign released a trailer for the film, Republicans have pointed to an interview Guggenheim gave to CNN's Piers Morgan in which the director said "the negative for me was there were too many accomplishments" to cite in the film. "I'm really quite in awe of him as a leader and the choices he made," he told Morgan.

The documentary features interviews with former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others, offering a mostly grim recounting of the problems Obama tackled. After hearing of the dire economic conditions shortly after Obama's election, his adviser David Axelrod recalls, "All I was thinking at this moment ? could we get a recount?"

Clinton is a voice of validation throughout the film, crediting Obama for his decision to pursue health care reform ? an overhaul that eluded his own presidency ? and swift moves to rescue General Motors and Chrysler from collapse. The former president is effusive in his praise of Obama's green-lighting of the U.S. raid that killed bin Laden.

"He took the harder and the more honorable path. When I saw what had happened, I said to myself, 'I hope that's a call I would have made,'" Clinton said. Biden says of Obama's decision: "If he was wrong, his presidency was done. Over."

Obama's interview is used sparingly. The president talks about how his mother's finances were drained by her struggle with cancer ? underscoring his pursuit of health care reform ? and how he felt after the killing of bin Laden.

Obama said he "didn't have time for a lot of feelings" following the raid "because our guys were still in that compound. And it wasn't until I knew they were across the border, they were safe, everyone was accounted for, including the dog, that I allowed some satisfaction."

The film takes a dig at Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney, showing his 2008 New York Times op-ed on the faltering U.S. auto industry, which was entitled, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt."

"A lot of conventional wisdom wanted to do what Mitt Romney did, let it go. It can't be saved. Why put good money after bad?" said Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff. The film says the decision led to a "resurgent" auto industry.

Hanks concludes the film by telling viewers "we would see rewards from tough decisions he had made. Not for quick political gain but for long-term and enduring change." He encourages people to "remember how far we've come and look forward to the work still to be done."

Left unsaid: Whether Obama's presidency will have a Hollywood ending in the minds of his supporters ? a second term.

According to reports, part of the new season of the HBO series ?Luck? will probably never see airtime for a very sad reason. Unfortunately, yet another horse used on the show had to be put down. This time, the horse reared back and struck its head bad enough to need to be euthanized. The "Desperate Housewives" star has sued a former employee, claiming the woman copied thousands of emails from Hatcher's computer.

And this plot line is worthy of any nighttime soap. Jennifer Glassman, the ex-staffer, had already sued Hatcher for supposedly offering her a partnership at her production company and then unceremoniously firing her a bit later after running her ragged.

But what sort of stuff could Glassman find out about her then-boss by reading emails her computer contained?

Hatcher claims, in court documents filed March 7 and obtained by E! News, that those letters contained details about her health and personal relationships, as well as work-related emails that detailed different opportunities she was considering beyond "Desperate Housewives."

The show, which has been overshadowed the last few weeks by the almost-over legal battle between former star Nicollette Sheridan and ABC Entertainment (and Marc Cherry, before the judge dismissed Sheridan's battery charge against him), signs off May 13 after eight seasons.

Hatcher's complaint states that Glassman came to work for her ISBE Productions in 2006 as a contracted consultant and Disney opted to bring her on exclusively to work for Hatcher's company the following year -- which, the suit states, required Glassman to sign a confidentiality agreement.

The actress maintains that Glassman resigned from her position in February 2010, requesting that she get a severance package and maintain "only a personal relationship and not a business relationship" with Hatcher.

Bolivia defends coca consumption as age-old tradition

VIENNA (Reuters) - Bolivian President Evo Morales defended Bolivians' right to chew coca leaves, the main ingredient of cocaine, on Monday, saying it was a tradition going back thousands of years and the world's No. 3 cocaine producer was working to fight drug trafficking.

The coca leaf was declared an illegal narcotic in the 1961 U.N. Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, along with cocaine, heroin, opium and morphine and a host of chemical drugs.

Bolivia has withdrawn from the convention but hopes to re-accede with a reservation recognizing coca chewing.

Morales, a former coca leaf farmer, told a United Nations' anti-drugs meeting in Vienna on Monday that chewing coca leaves was an "ancestral right" for Bolivians.

"We are not drug addicts when we consume the coca leaf. The coca leaf is not cocaine, we have to get rid of this misconception," he said, holding up a coca leaf during a speech that ended with applause from the hall.

"This is a millennia-old tradition in Bolivia and we would hope that you will understand that coca leaf producers are not drug dealers."

Bolivia, the biggest cocaine producer after Peru and Colombia, has been trying to promote coca's health benefits and develop legal uses for coca leaves.

Coca is the raw material for making cocaine but Bolivians have chewed the leaves for centuries as a mild stimulant that reduces hunger and altitude sickness.

Morales has asked the United Nations to decriminalize the practice.

"We would hope that those who are present in this room will recognize that consumption of the coca leaf ... is essentially for positive purposes and will support us," he told the meeting in comments translated from Spanish to English.

"We are very much aware of the damage that can be done by cocaine and we are working against drug trafficking ... but we want the recognition of these ancestral rights."

He showed participants at the meeting marmalade, tea and other products made with coca to back up his assertion that the leaf is not dangerous and can have beneficial uses.

Earlier, Yury Fedotov, head of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said illegal drugs represented a "trans-national threat of extraordinary proportions" as he opened the week-long Commission on Narcotic Drugs meeting in the Austrian capital. Progress on fighting the production of illegal drugs had been limited, he said.

"Have we achieved results? Yes, but only in some areas," Fedotov told participants in a speech.

"Over the last decade, coca cultivation has decreased by one third, opium poppy cultivation has also declined by 15 percent, while overall opium production is still increasing."

U.S. SEES BOLIVIA DRUGS FAILURE

Earlier this month, the U.S. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs said Bolivia had failed "demonstrably to make sufficient efforts to meet its obligations under international counter-narcotics agreements".

"Taken as a whole, eradication and interdiction results have not been adequate to compete with the rising drug trends that have brought Bolivia back to high coca cultivation and cocaine production levels," it said.

Bolivia and the United States agreed late last year to patch up their differences and restore full diplomatic ties three years after the Andean nation's leftist president threw out the American ambassador and Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

However, Bolivia said it would not let U.S. anti-drug agents return even as government officials work with Washington on a plan to fight the narcotics trade.

It's no surprise that notebooks, Ultrabooks and tablets were pretty much the flavors of the day here at CeBIT, and we've already picked out a few choice selections. So, we're bringing you a second OEM Android tablet, but we liked the sound of it so much, we just had to give it a try. Chinese manufacturers certainly seem to be embracing the 9.7-inch form-factor, and that's what we have here. That translates to a 1024 x 768-pixel display, which benefits from in-plane switching (IPS) for improved viewing angles. Sadly, it's another absolute fingerprint magnet, so you'll need to keep your cloth handy or learn to live with it. We barely handled it at all, and we'd already given the feds enough to catch us several times over.

The innards are pretty modest, with a "Boxchip" A10 1.5GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4 gigs of internal memory, but it seemed to run just fine. We were handling an engineering sample at the show, which meant there were a few visual blemishes, but reps promised that they won't find their way into production versions. Unlike other budget (and some not-so-budget) slabs, this one has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and a relatively impressive 5-megapixel shooter around the back, supported by a 6,000mAh battery -- which the makers promise provides up to 8 hours of use. Getting out on to the internet can be done via WiFI (802.11b/g/n), or over 3G by popping in a SIM. The all-plastic finish has a few quirks, like the power button sitting next to the camera, but it doesn't look all-together bad given what you're paying -- well, what OEMs will be paying, at least, considering that this tab won't be shipping directly to consumers. As always, we took it for a quick spin, which you can see in the video just after the break.
