Student brought $20,000 to school

(Getty Images News)

A 12-year-old recently had quite the show-and-tell at school: According to the Detroit News, she brought a backpack stuffed with $20,000 in cash.

Police, who declined to name the girl, said the student received it from a child who lives across the street from her in Taylor, outside of Detroit.

Word got around at the local Sixth Grade Academy that the girl was handing out cash to her friends. That?s when the principal stepped in and called the police.

"The school district called us and said a 12-year-old student had a backpack full of money," Taylor Chief of Police Mary Sclabassi said. "The principal became aware of it when she heard the student was giving money away to friends. They brought in the student, secured the backpack and retrieved the money she had given away. This is a real first for me."

Commenters on the Detroit News website were also stunned by the news. Doran Hollow wrote, ?That was my middle school and I never ran into anyone so generous.?

Scott Gypsy opined, ?She must have been a fan of Robin Hood.?

Added Brent Link, ?My other thought was casino winnings. But drugs was the first one to cross my mind. Who really keeps that kind of money under their mattress??

No word on what the neighbors were doing with that amount of cash around the house, but undoubtedly they were glad to have it back.

Wallace, Kruger highlight 1st day of free agency

Ready. Set. Spend!

The NFL's free agent frenzy began Tuesday, with Mike Wallace, Paul Kruger and Dannell Ellerbe among the big names to switch teams for big paychecks.

Several other stars, including Nnamdi Asomugha, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Antoine Winfield, are looking for jobs after they were cut in cost-saving moves on a busy opening day of free agency.

The Baltimore Ravens are paying the price for winning a Super Bowl. The NFL champions lost two key components of their defense in Kruger and Ellerbe. On Monday, they traded star receiver Anquan Boldin, a key to their title run, to San Francisco ? the team the Ravens beat 34-31 to win the championship.

Kruger went north to division rival Cleveland for a five-year, $40 million deal, while Ellerbe headed south to Miami for $35 million over five years. Wallace, a former Steelers star receiver, joined Ellerbe in choosing the Dolphins.

"He has a unique skill set which we believe will be a welcome addition to our offense," general manager Jeff Ireland said of Wallace in a statement.

Baltimore did sign free agent defensive end Chris Canty, who spent the previous four seasons with the New York Giants.

The 49ers didn't go untouched, either. After giving up a sixth-round draft pick for Boldin, they saw tight end Delanie Walker leave for Tennessee.

San Francisco also confirmed the trade of backup quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City, a deal that was known for weeks. The 49ers will receive the Chiefs' second-round pick, 34th overall, in this year's draft and a conditional pick in next year's draft.

The 32-year-old Boldin expressed surprise that he was traded.

"I thought this was the last stop of my career but regardless of the circumstances I came here to win a Championship ... and in February we came home Champions," he said on Twitter.

Ellerbe also tweeted as he moved on to the Dolphins.

"Just wanna take time to THANK GOD for being in this position I'm in! Before I make da BIGGEST DECISION in my life I just wanna thank him!!!" Ellerbe said.

Kruger led the Ravens with nine sacks and added 2? in the playoffs and two in the Super Bowl. But he was too expensive for Baltimore to keep.

Wallace will give Miami the speedy receiver it has sought after getting just three touchdown catches from its wideouts last season. The Dolphins also re-signed free safety Chris Clemons to a one-year deal.

Denver ensured that Peyton Manning will be the Broncos' quarterback through at least 2014.

The four-time MVP's contract called for a guaranteed salary of $20 million in 2013 and 2014 if he was on the Denver roster Tuesday. The final two years of his contract are worth $19 million each, but are not guaranteed.

Coming off multiple neck operations, Manning threw for 4,659 yards and 37 touchdowns last season and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He turns 37 on March 24.

Kansas City was busy finding support for Smith on both sides of the ball. The Chiefs agreed to a four-year, $16 million deal with tight end Anthony Fasano, a three-year, $12.6 million contract with defensive tackle Mike DeVito, and a three-year deal with Saints backup quarterback Chase Daniel.

Fitzpatrick, the Bills' starting quarterback, was released 1? years after getting a six-year, $59 million contract extension. Fitzpatrick struggled after signing the new deal, and the Bills went 6-10 in 2011 and in 2012.

Philadelphia released Asomugha, who two years ago got a five-year, $60 million contract with $24 million guaranteed when he left Oakland as a free agent. Asomugha was a flop in Philly, often victimized in single coverage.

Asomugha was scheduled to make $15 million next season, with $4 million guaranteed.

Earlier, Tony Gonzalez changed his mind and decided to return to the Falcons.

The NFL's career leader among tight ends with 1,242 receptions and 103 touchdowns said he was 95 percent certain he would retire after 2012, but the other 5 percent won out.

Hours before free agency began Tuesday, Gonzalez tweeted:

"The lure of being on such a great team and organization, along with unbelievable fan support was too good to pass up."

The Falcons also agreed to a six-year contract with left tackle Sam Baker, bringing back another key player on a team that came up just short of the Super Bowl.

Defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, both implicated in the Saints' bounty scandal, agreed to restructure their contracts to remain with New Orleans.

The 31-year-old Smith and 30-year-old Vilma, both veteran defensive captains, would have taken up about $23 million combined in salary cap space without the redone deals.

Minnesota finalized the trade of receiver Percy Harvin to Seattle, released 14-year veteran cornerback Winfield and re-signed right tackle Phil Loadholt. The Seahawks are sending their first-round and seventh-round draft picks this year plus their third-round selection in 2014 to the Vikings for Harvin.

Also Tuesday:

?Houston cut receiver Kevin Walter, who was due to make $2 million in salary. Walter never became the threat opposite Andre Johnson that the team hoped for. He caught 41 passes for 518 yards and two touchdowns in 2012. The Texans then lost tight end James Casey to Philadelphia.

?Tennessee agreed to terms with Buffalo guard Andy Levitre and Walker. Levitre, one of the top offensive linemen on the market, got a six-year deal worth nearly $47 million. He will replace Steve Hutchinson, who announced his retirement earlier Tuesday. Walker will help replace Jared Cook, whom the Titans declined to tag as a franchise player because he wants to be paid more like a receiver. Cook signed a five-year deal with St. Louis.

The Titans waived safety Jordan Babineaux and guard Mitch Petrus.

?Pittsburgh re-signed linebacker Larry Foote and wide receiver Plaxico Burress, and tendered offers to four restricted free agents: receiver Emmanuel Sanders, running backs Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman, all of whom could be starters in 2013, and nose tackle Steve McLendon.

?Denver agreed to terms with guard Louis Vasquez, late of San Diego. According to STATS, he has allowed just 11 sacks and had one penalty during his time with the Chargers.

?Tight end Martellus Bennett agreed to a four-year contract with the Bears, leaving the Giants after one season. Defensive tackle Henry Melton signed his franchise tag tender at $8.45 million, and the Bears agreed to a five-year contract with New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod.

?Cincinnati re-signed defensive ends Robert Geathers and Wallace Gilberry.

?Carolina cut linebacker James Anderson, a seven-year veteran who set a franchise record in 2011 with 174 tackles.

?San Diego released 11-year veteran tight end Randy McMichael and signed kicker Nick Novak to a four-year contract. The Chargers also agreed to terms with tight end John Phillips and tackle King Dunlap.

?The New York Jets cut nose tackle Sione Po'uha and restructured the contracts of receiver Santonio Holmes and cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

? The Oakland Raiders cut ties with two former first-round picks by releasing starting receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and defensive back Michael Huff. The Raiders also cut defensive end Dave Tollefson and re-signed cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year deal before the start of the league year.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) University of Utah graduate students in the Entertainment Arts and Engineering program prepare for the upcoming UBI Software gaming competition in the Master Games Studio Friday. The University of Utah's Entertainment Arts and Engineering programs were ranked No. 1 in the country for undergraduates and No. 2 for graduates Tuesday.

University of Utah?s video game design program No. 1 in nation

It?s better than reaching the top of the leader board in "Modern Warfare": The University of Utah?s undergraduate video game design program was named the best in the country Tuesday.

"This is exciting, this is really exciting," said Mark Van Langeveld, director of the engineering track of the Entertainment Arts and Engineering program. "Locally, I do believe that people don?t understand what we?ve created here."

The undergraduate program beat out the 150 other institutions in the rankings published by The Princeton Review and PC Gamer magazine. The school?s graduate program also marked a large jump, coming in at No. 2.

Evaluators were impressed by the program?s method of building games in teams that pair art-oriented students with those who are computer- or engineering-centric, said David Soto, director of content development at The Princeton Review.

"It?s almost like they?re working at a start-up when they?re in school," Soto said. "They learn how to work in a team, how to interview."

When those students graduate, they make a median income of $72,000 a year for undergraduates and about $97,000 for those with master?s degrees.

"These are compelling figures that are hard to argue with," Soto said.

Graduate student Sterling Pierce said he worked in information technology for eight years before deciding to switch to video games. He chose the U. because it?s both nearby and well-regarded. Set to graduate in May, he?s now in Orlando working at a project management internship with Electronic Arts, maker of huge sports titles such as Madden NFL, FIFA Soccer and NHL games.

"It is a dream come true. Every day, it?s a little surreal to wake up and go into your dream studio and be a part of the dynamics in the environment," Pierce said.

Several video game makers, including EA, have offices in Salt Lake City. Jon Dean, vice president and general manager at EA Salt Lake, said in a statement: "Having the top ranked academic program for game development in the nation a few miles from our studio helps us not only with hiring tomorrow?s brightest game professionals but allows us to continue making incredible games here in Salt Lake."

story continues below

And those internships pay off. In the class of 2012, all of the master?s students had a job at or before graduation and 54 percent of undergraduates were employed when they got their diploma, according to the Review.

Almost all the U.?s professors have experience working in video games, including for major companies such as Disney, Microsoft and EA, and Langeveld traces the program?s strength to the U.?s computer science program from about 1965 through the ?80s. The school produced students such as John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe, and Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar.

"We knew this is what we wanted to do, and there was a core group of people who were founders of this program. We went to all the ranked schools around, came back and started building this program," he said.

They host summer camps for high school students, and interview every promising applicant to the program. The graduating class size is just over 100 from the bachelor?s program and 25 to 50 for the master?s program.

The word has spread, drawing applicants from China, India, Russian, Mexico and Indonesia. Part of the draw comes from people seeing and playing student-created games such as "Erie." Each game has a thesis, and Erie aims to make a player feel fear. Distributed online as a free download, it took off after people recorded themselves playing it and posted the videos on YouTube.

"Within a very short period of time, it had several million views ... then the downloads began," Langeveld said.

The Princeton Review is a private education and college preparation company that produced the ratings based on a 50-question survey. Curriculum, faculty credentials, facilities and infrastructure all play into the rating, as well as scholarships, financial aid and graduates? job prospects.

The U.?s five-year-old program has been competitive in the past, but settled for the silver and bronze in 2011 and 2012. This year, it beat the other top schools, including the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and Nintendo?s own DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, Wash.

The graduate program came in sixth shortly after it was established in 2010, but last year fell off the top 10. The two-year-long master?s program rose in the ratings this year after it produced its first crop of graduates, Langeveld said, coming in second to USC.

"It?s a really young major and a young field," Soto said. "As these programs grow, we could see more schools participate and more schools become recognized for what they?re doing."

Is Social Media Combined With Internet Video The Future Of ...

chad-hurley-youtube

It has been said once before and it will be said again; social enterprise is the future of online media. Social networking websites such as Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter have given users the ability to share content in a competitive micro blogging industry but with little hope of a future beyond one hundred and forty characters.

This has lead top angel investors and internet entrepreneurs alike to beg the question: what?s next for social? Chad Hurley, the co-founder of Youtube believes online video combined with the aspect of social media sharing is the gateway toward the future.

The following is reported by Ryan Tate from Wired:

Chad Hurley is within a month of launching a collaborative online video startup, the YouTube co-founder said at the South by Southwest festival this weekend. The disclosure is one of the clearest signs yet that video distribution networks are becoming more and more like social networks.

In an on-stage conversation with Digg founder Kevin Rose, Hurley said his collaboration startup is ?primarily video-based ? and gives flexibility for people to work together and create content,? according to Adweek. He added that it?s about a month from launch.

Hurley?s launch comes as his prior startup YouTube itself becomes more collaborative under owner Google. YouTube this past fall opened a 41,000-square foot studio in a former Los Angeles aircraft hangar, where amateur video producers can work with one another and use professional-grade equipment. YouTube is also working to make its comment section more socially sophisticated, with more real names and higher-quality feedback.

Ottawans drink more than others in Ontario: Public health - Ottawa Sun

Ottawa Public Health has launched a war on booze abuse ahead of one of the largest binge-drinking days of the year.

The city?s health agency says it will beef up its education campaign against problem drinking in Ottawa.

?We are worried about alcohol as it?s the most commonly missed substance,? health promotion manager Sherry Nigro said Monday.

Nigro said public health?s announcement of the strategy ahead of St. Patrick?s Day this Sunday is ?more serendipitous than anything else.?

A new public health study found that alcohol leads to 970 hospitalizations and 110 deaths in the city?s adult population annually. About 63 infants are hospitalized each year because of low birth weight linked to alcohol use during pregnancy.

The study found that the drinking habits of Ottawa residents are consistently higher than the provincial average. Public health says one-quarter of adults and nearly three-quarters of young men reported ?heavy or binge drinking? in the past year.

Nigro said there isn?t information to explain why Ottawa?s drinking habits are worse, but she speculated there is more disposable income and the city is home to four post-secondary institutions.

One in three adults exceeded the recommended weekly limits in Canada?s low risk drinking guidelines, which are used as a health indicator in the province.

The guidelines recommend a maximum of 10 drinks a week for women with a maximum two drinks a day on most days. For men, it?s a maximum of 15 drinks a week with a daily maximum of three.

On special occasions ? and this is for all the St. Patty?s revellers ? the recommended maximums are three drinks for women and four drinks for men, while staying within the weekly limits.

A standard drink is considered to be a 12-oz. beer at 5% alcohol, 5-oz. wine at 12% and a 1.5-oz. shot at 40%.

Nigro said staff are seeing positive results with more young people delaying their initiation with alcohol.

The health board will receive a staff report on substance abuse next Monday.

According to the report, there are about 40 drug overdose deaths in Ottawa annually, plus another eight deaths attributed to drug-related infectious diseases.

The report describes various drug prevention initiatives and suggests strengthening harm reduction programs, like the clean needle exchange.

The report notes staff are monitoring the debate on safe-injection sites and ?has no plans to open such a site in Ottawa.?

This could be complicated, as I don't know what he's not liking... If he's legitimately worried you're going to get hurt, then it's totally different from if he's trying to take away something you like to do until you make what HE thinks is a better school record. As a somewhat successful adult in life and in business, I can say that my bodybuilding sport is part of my self esteem, and without it I would NOT do as well as I am doing. Therefore, if your mind works like mine does, your Dad should understand that not liking you do your sport, is in fact not wanting you to do better in studies after all Wink . But on the other hand, if he is just concerned that you will get hurt, you might work to convince him that you are reading and studying about fitness and injury prevention, and remind him that people get hurt sometimes, no matter what they're doing, and that you are being careful so that the benefits of a good physical conditioning will outweigh the risk of injuries and bad self esteem from feeling out-of-shape...

Your dad may be sort of right on your squatting. If your form sucks you will blow some discs out. He'd probably not be as alarmed if you looked a bit better doing it. You've complained about back pain before from squatting, so maybe your form isn't all there. I know for me, I almost never felt any real issues after switching from parallel wide stanced powerlifting kinda squats to full depth Olympic lifter squats.

Like that. Much safer. You'll have to drop weight at first, but it's well worth it.

I think front squats are overall better/more important, though. If you do some front squatting ATG for a month or a couple weeks, the ATG back squat will come naturally.

Backsquats are almost always gonna have some element of a good morning in them, where you're lifting the weight with your back, whereas front squats don't allow that. So personally I'd take some time off and really work on the front squat, then go back to backsquats later.

As far as me and my dad, my dad at 31 years old had a 260lb clean and jerk at 218lbs, 170 snatch, 180 press, 300s front squat. I do believe I'll overtake him and do his lifts at a lighter bodyweight than him, but yeah. My dad's been more or less apathetic about my lifting, and doesn't wanna do it with me, he's older though, like 56. The only thing he didn't like about my training was I initially went with very low reps and high percentages of maxes, and he told me to use high reps as "you feel better." Now I know about how easy my CNS can get blown out, so now I'm a bit more moderate and generally train 5x5 type of thing.

My dad was born last month in 1959, so hes 54

Also, I mean I see guys back squatting in the mid 1000s,even in high school lots of us get 500-some and I only freaking max out like early mid 200s, so I mean its not like i do too heavy weights.
And I only put like 5 more pounds yesterday after staying @170 for like half a year

Uh, bro, those 1K squats are usually with suits on to increase the amount of weight you lift, and many are just barely parallel. Focus on ATG squatting. I think nobody in your high school has a legit depth 500 squat. I highly doubt that.

That's not nearly as impressive as something like this:

Half the weight, double as impressive in my mind.

Also, don't you weigh like 150? If you want guaranteed more weight on the bar, you gotta get more weight on you. Of course then you'll look crappier and might not be as good athletically, thus making your lifting useless. For some sports, extra mass is super helpful, like football. Just eat whatever the hell as long as you're full as hell, and go lift. Food is theoretically the most anabolic thing around.

Your dad is a PT? I actually got really good advice from my sister's PT. Good mobility exercises. He is to some degree right, but wrong. The point in exercise is forcing an adaptation to occur. However, you get injured when the adaptation doesn't happen. So you have to be smart about your adaptation. I believe focusing on the front squat is better, as it forces the ab muscles to get stronger, and that saves your back from taking the weight. Then for the back muscles focus on pulls and other back exercises to build the traps up to put the bar on the traps.

China says U.S. is top source of hacking attacks on country

BEIJING (Reuters) - The United States was the origin of more than half of the hacking attacks on China in the first two months of 2013, state news agency Xinhua said on Sunday, amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington over the use of the Internet.

Beijing and Washington have been squaring off for months over the issue of cyber attacks, each accusing the other of hacking into sensitive government websites.

China has long singled out the United States as the top source of intrusion on its computers.

China's top Internet security agency, the National Computer Network Emergency Response Coordination Center (CNCERT), said the hacking attacks from other countries have become "increasingly serious", Xinhua said.

For the first two months of the year, 2,196 control servers in the United States "controlled" 1.29 million host computers in China, making it "the top-ranking country" that hacked into servers and host computers in China, according to Xinhua.

"A large amount of facts have proven that for many years, China has been one of the primary victims of cyber attacks," an unnamed official from the China National Internet Information Office told Xinhua.

In February, the Defense Ministry said that two major Chinese military websites, including that of the Defense Ministry, were subject to about 144,000 hacking attacks a month last year, almost two-thirds of which came from the United States.

A U.S. computer security company in February said that a secretive Chinese military unit was likely behind a series of hacking attacks mostly targeting the United States, setting off a war of words between Washington and Beijing.

China has denied the allegations and said it was the victim.

The hacking dispute adds to diplomatic tension between China and the United States, already strained by Chinese suspicion about Washington's "pivot" back to Asia and arguments over issues from trade to human rights.

Xi3 starts Piston pre-orders: buy an early Steambox for under $1,000

NEWS RELEASE: With Demand Growing, Xi3 Corporation Opens Pre-Orders for its PISTON Console (PC)

Xi3 Corporation also plans to disclose additional details about its forthcoming PISTON Console at the Gaming Expo held March 8-10 during the 2013 South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas

SALT LAKE CITY and AUSTIN, Texas - March 8, 2013 - Xi3 Corporation today announced it will begin accepting pre-orders for its PISTON? Console (PC) at the Gaming Expo held today, tomorrow and Sunday during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.

The list price of Xi3's PISTON Console starts at $999.99. Any PISTON Console pre-order placed between now and the end of SXSW 2013 (11:59 p.m. CST, Sunday, March 17, 2013), will receive a $100 discount off the list price, with pre-ordered PISTON Consoles shipped in time for the 2013 Holiday Season. (The special PISTON Console pre-order page is found at http://xi3.com/buy_now-piston.php.)

"Given the amount of awards, media attention and gamer interest the PISTON Console has generated since it was unveiled at CES 2013 in January, we've become seriously concerned that we will not be able to meet the demand for PISTON Consoles this year," said Jason A. Sullivan, founder, president and CEO of Xi3 Corporation. "That's why we have decided to begin accepting pre-orders on our PISTON Console, beginning today with the start of the SXSW Gaming Expo. Gaming Expo attendees will also get the benefit of being the first to see the PISTON Console in action."

Additional PISTON Console Details Forthcoming

Xi3 will showcase "live" gameplay on alpha versions of its PISTON Console at the 2013 SXSW Gaming Expo in Xi3's booth (#400). Additionally, Xi3 is slated to deliver a "live" on-stage presentation at the Gaming Expo on Saturday, March 9 beginning at 7 p.m.

"Clearly, the computer/video gaming market is huge, both in the personal computer and traditional console markets," Sullivan stated. "That being said, we believe there is a crying need for a machine that captures the best of both worlds, with the upgradeability of computer gaming rigs and the design and form factor of consoles. We believe our PISTON Consoles do exactly that-deliver the beauty and small size of consoles with the upgradeability of computers."

The grapefruit-sized Xi3 PISTON Console was announced at the 2013 International CES trade show in January as a "development stage system optimized for computer gameplay on large high-definition television monitors." This January announcement generated massive interest in the worldwide computer/video game industry, and Xi3 garnered several notable awards and honors for its PISTON efforts, even as a development stage product.

The PISTON Console is derived from the forthcoming X7A Modular? Computer, Xi3's first power user computer. Xi3 will reveal additional product details about the PISTON Console and its plans for formally entering the game marketplace at the 2013 SXSW Gaming Expo.

NOTE: The 2013 SXSW Gaming Expo is being held March 8-10, 2013 in the Palmer Event Center at 900 Barton Springs Road in Austin, Texas. The hours for the Gaming Expo are as follows:

Friday, March 8: 3-9 p.m.
Saturday, March 9: 12 Noon-8 p.m.

Ch?vez funeral: How do you spot a true Ch?vista? (+video)

For millions of Hugo Ch?vez?s supporters, waiting in line for 12 hours or more is a small sacrifice for the opportunity to spend a few seconds in front of his coffin.

They spend all day in line in the searing heat for a chance to pay their respects. For Hugo Ch?vez?s supporters, waiting in line for 12 hours or more to spend a few seconds in front of his coffin has become something of a required pilgrimage.

?It?s something that all Chavistas should do. Something they need to do,? says Higdalia Az?car, who was not deterred by stories of daylong waits ?We came here for the love. We wouldn?t miss it.?

The line stretches for miles, weaving through shade and sunlight, past public parks and in front of the bleachers where Venezuelans watched Ch?vez salute military parades.

On Friday morning, state-run television said more than 2 millions Venezuelans had made the trip to the low-slung military academy where Ch?vez?s open casket has been since Wednesday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who will be sworn in as interim president this evening, on Thursday extended the viewing for an additional seven days due to the response. Thereafter, Ch?vez?s body will be embalmed, much the way Russia?s Vladmir Lenin and China?s Mao Zedong were, and displayed in a glass case for eternity, Mr. Maduro says.

Once inside, visitors said they saw Ch?vez wearing his signature red beret and sash. Photography was not permitted, but visitors say that on Wednesday and Thursday, Ch?vez was dressed in a blue suit. That was swapped out this morning ? before his funeral ? for his military fatigues.

?I was filled with sadness when I approached his casket,? says Juana Uscategui, an elementary school teacher. She waited 15 hours in a wheelchair to catch a glimpse. ?When I finally saw, I was overcome with joy, as he was finally resting. He wore his red hat, his suit and medals. He was beautiful.?

For Lenin Benitez, a political organizer, it was a two-day journey.

After driving overnight from the state of Lara in the northwest, he queued up because it was ?necessary to see him again and to show to the world that Venezuela stood with their president.?

He adored the idea of embalming the president.

?In the rest of the world, people tell their children stories about fictitious heroes, like Batman and Robin,? Mr. Benitez says. ?Here in Venezuela, we can tell our story of Hugo Ch?vez and his deeds. But more than that, we can show him to our children and continue to inspire the revolution.?

Preston man awarded for early detection of skin cancer scheme ...

NHS Innovation logo

Skin Cancer Specialist Billy Hefferon, who lives in Preston, was presented with a NHS Innovation Challenge Prize in London recently.

The award was for his work on the team that is helping detect early signs of skin cancer. The project was Highly Commended for Earlier Cancer Diagnosis -?A ?beautiful? approach to detecting skin cancer earlier.? The event was attended by??Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, ?Secretary of State for Health.

Photo-Kerry-Crooks

Also part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network and Preston College team was NHS Central Lancashire public health associate, Kerry Crooks.

Billy, who works at the Burnley General and Royal Blackburn Hospitals, has been working with Preston College, local hair and beauty salons, training assessors and hair and beauty students, delivering skin cancer training sessions to highlight the specialist role hair and beauty professionals can play ? being in that prime position to spot any changes to skin lesions on their clients and encourage clients to see their GP.

Billy states: ?The students would be in a unique position to spot skin cancer lesions on their clients, Billy pointed out, and they could help get problems diagnosed more quickly. A large proportion of the people I see have something called basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

?Although this is not as dangerous as a melanoma, a BCC can cause severe disfigurement, and they usually need surgical removal. Almost all of them appear on the face or neck ? the areas which are always exposed to sunlight, no matter what the weather is like.

?Hairdressers and beauty therapists have anecdotally spotted things for years but we wanted to formalise it and help them understand what they might see.

?They?re not expected to diagnose things but can point people in the right direction.?

The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust Clinical Nurse previously ran sessions at Preston college and is now looking to take the scheme out to the Blackburn and Burnley areas.

Despite skin cancer being one of the most common types there is real nationwide skin cancer screening programme in the UK, with many cases going undetected until it is too late.

Skin cancer is caused by too much exposure to UV light from the sun or sunbeds, so most cases are preventable, though rates have been increasing in recent years.

Experts recommend sun protection, such as clothes, hats, sunglasses, and using sun cream of at least factor 30. Keep an eye on your skin, and report to a doctor, without delay, any changes in the size, shape, or colour, of a mole, or other patch of skin.

Bunny lost 'n' found: Instagram rescues toddler's toy from trash

Bunny

Matt Ross

When a tourist took a photo of an abandoned plush bunny on a side street in Los Angeles, he didn't realize he was providing the key clue to help reunite a young boy with a precious gift from his dearly departed grandmother. The result was a small social-media miracle.

The bunny, which doesn't have a name, belongs to two-and-a-half-year-old Max. "It's never taken outside of the house," Frances Page, Max's mom, told TODAY. "He must've snuck it into the stroller and dropped it."

As soon as the bunny's absence was noted, a frantic search began. After all, it was a gift from Max's grandmother, who had passed away. "I decided to go the traditional route and put up posters," Page said. "My husband put a photo of the poster on Twitter and Instagram."

At the same time that Matt Ross, Max's dad, was uploading a photo of the poster to Instagram, a Minneapolis resident, visiting Los Angeles for the first time, posted a photo of a sad stuffed bunny, lying in the road, that he'd spotted during a stroll.

"The fur matted down from hugs and squeezes, I could tell this little guy laying in the sun had been much loved," Jason Ho wrote in a post on his personal blog. "But by it's whimsical position on the ground he must have been abandoned on accident."

Bunny

Jason Ho

"I collect a lot of toys and I love childhood memory type things," Ho told TODAY, elaborating on how he felt when he saw the bunny. "Oh, let's take a shot of this."

So why didn't he pick it up? "I kinda debated ? I didn't want to touch it. People usually come back for these things," he added. "And I didn't even know where I would take it."

He heard some kids playing nearby, so he figured chances were good that the bunny belonged to one of them.

By the time Ho arrived at his temporary L.A. lodging, he noticed that he'd been tagged on a stranger's Instagram photo. An eagle-eyed user commented on Ross' photo to say that Ho "just posted something that looks like what [he's] looking for."

Ho quickly shared the geotag information from his photo of the bunny with Max's parents and then spoke to them on the phone, describing the spot where he'd encountered it in more detail. Page and her son set out to retrieve the precious plush.

Alas, it wasn't where Ho had last seen it.

Bunny

Matt Ross

"We ended up asking around," Page said. A kind man working on a nearby home had seen the bunny as well, hours earlier. He helped Page check trashcans, in case someone had callously chucked the bunny into one. And what do you know? That's where the bunny was found.

"We put him into the wash, cleaned him up and he's back with us," Page concludes a retelling of the adventure. "It's so sweet that people we don't know at all ? helped us."

"It's so weird how someone was able to locate someone so fast, especially though a random picture of a bunny," Ho remarked to TODAY in a separate phone call. "It was just so weird ... to have this cool little story happen. It sends chills up the spine."

Dell's special committee defends sale of company

(Reuters) - A special committee of Dell Inc's board of directors said the pending sale of the PC maker was the best alternative for shareholders, despite opposition from its largest outside shareholder.

The committee, which had been analyzing Dell's situation for more than five months, said in a statement on Wednesday that it had "negotiated aggressively" to ensure shareholders got the best possible value in agreeing to founder Michael Dell's $13.65 per share offer to take the company private.

Other alternatives the special committee said it looked at besides a sale included a leverage recapitalization, changing the dividend policy, selling parts of the business and working with the company's current business plan.

The committee said that investment bank Evercore is still soliciting potential alternative proposals in a process that ends March 22.

Michael Dell said in February he had struck a deal to take Dell private, partnering with private equity firm Silver Lake and Microsoft Corp . The goal is to facilitate Dell's difficult transition from a commodity maker of computers into a provider of services to enterprises as a private company, away from Wall Street's scrutiny.

But since the deal was announced, a steady stream of investors have said the price was too low.

On Tuesday, Dell's largest external shareholder, Southeastern Asset Management, demanded that Dell open its books, signaling it could become more active in opposing the offer.

Shareholders representing almost 14 percent of Dell shares, led by Southeastern with a stake of more than 8 percent, including options, have said they will vote against the proposed buyout. No. 3 shareholder T. Rowe Price has also spoken out against the deal.

Matterport 3D camera aims to map your interior world, display it from the cloud

Matterport 3D camera aims to map your interior world, display it from the cloudStartup Matterport's just closed a round of investor funding to bring its 3D mapping camera and "interactive viewing platform" one step closer to commercial production. The company, founded in 2011 and backed by the likes of Qualcomm Ventures, aims to let consumers build virtual, cloud-based maps of their homes, offices or other sites of interest -- using a special camera rig -- for eventual viewing on laptops or tablets. It's an ambitious project that's managed to raise nearly $6 million in funding so far. But despite that investment, details on the specifics of the system, as well as a visual of the actual hardware used are scarce. So this could all very well smack of vaporware. For now, though, Matterport's site is selling the dream -- literally, as you can sign-up to pre-order now. So if you want to take a gander at what those 3D indoor maps may look like, hit up the source below.
